Wastewater
What is Wastewater?
The Town of Palisade is in charge of treating and maintaining the local water supply. Wastewater is made up of all the water that goes down the drain in your home or business. This includes "gray water" from sinks, washing machines, and dishwashers as well as "black water" from sewer lines.
Did You Know?
Fat, Oil, & Grease
Fat, oil, and grease, or FOG, that makes its way into the water system can cause no end of problems for a local water supply. FOG builds up in sewer lines, causing reduced flow and damage to lines. In addition, FOG can create a barrier around possibly harmful bacteria or other foreign matter which makes it harder to treat and sanitize wastewater.
While the majority of FOG comes from the food industry, local homes and other businesses also contribute their share of FOG into the system. In order to help combat this growing issue, the Town of Palisade Municipal Code includes provisions for the management of sewer and wastewater FOG. The Utility department is working on creating testing and mitigation practices for the prevention of FOG in our local wastewater system.
What can you do to prevent FOG?
While industrial and food service businesses have different requirements, the easiest way for homeowners to combat the buildup of FOG in our sewer system is to pour the fat, oil, or grease from cooking into a container, let it cool, and add it to your everyday trash.
Drinking Water
In accordance with Colorado Primary Drinking Water Regulations (5 CCR 1002-11.39), the Town of Palisade, an as owner/operator of a public water system, is charged with protecting drinking water from potential contamination through backflow and/or cross connections. Uncontrolled backflow or cross connections can introduce chemical, biological, and/or radiological contaminants to the water supply that pose unacceptable health and/or safety risks to the public.
If you have any questions regarding backflow/cross connection prevention, please contact Fred Miller by phone at (970) 464-5602 or by email at info@townofpalisade.org
A list of certified backflow testers can be found here:
Backflow & Cross Connection Testers
This list does not include all certified testers for backflow or cross connection. The Town of Palisade does not endorse nor guarantee the work performed by any vendor on this list.
Did You Know?
Cloudy Water
Does your water look cloudy? Chances are there is air in the water line. It may look a bit off, but there is nothing wrong with the water. Check it out!
